time spent
pounding out a poultice
to strain out every sopping word
through this rough hurt
a crag impassable
so paced living
balanced bottomed need
with soft riposte
gentle accompaniment
to trust long askance
at last
bathing off the combustible years
drying in a backhand saucer
pouring each syllable
into an unflamed samovar
and slapping on the lid
someday
when steeped just right
pour a cup
for Monday Melting at rosemary mint

“pouring each syllable
into an unflamed samovar”
Any flames yet? I was just rereading this, and it’s so sad that the water is cold. 😦
flipside,
Sorry, my dear. I’ve been very busy–new job and sister who won’t take “No” for an answer. She has me walking or playing tennis almost every night. I’m still trying to catch up on my backlog of reading blogs. I’m almost there and definitely itching to write. Expect something by the end of the week. Promise. 🙂
Lovely. Enjoy your nights of tennis playing. That sounds fun!
flipside,
I’m really enjoying it. Just sore afterward. 😉
I love this! It reads to me more of “Life”, a whole life and not a Monday melting. It made me wonder if each segment of our lives are just miniscule copies of the “bigger picture” and I liked that about it. When I read the line, “and slapping on the lid” I imagined trapping it all and saving it. Wow. Awesome!
Leslie,
Once I learned what a samovar was, the poem practically wrote itself. Shawna makes wonderfully, tempting word lists. I’m glad you enjoyed the piece. I should have another one up by the end of the week.
riposte…askance section is inspired… think you did a great job here with the words. Nice to visit again
Luke,
Welcome back. I love reading your comments. I have to go back review what I’ve written, and your words make me think through things all over again. Thanks you for both.
Come see me at my new crib when you get a chance. And write me a new poem. It’s been way too long! How is your summer in Texas going? ~Shawna
Hey girl,
Been there already and the site screams you. Poem later today. This weekend is my reunion weekend, and I’m loving it. I had a blast yesterday with around 30 classmates from high school. So many change, so few changes. Beautiful kids, beautiful grand-kids. The summer has been great so far. Catch you later at your place.
I’m so glad you’re having fun! We didn’t even have our ten-year reunion. 😦
I didn’t make it to either of mine. The one I attended this weekend is actually of the high school from which I should have graduated. We ended up moving after my junior year. To my knowledge I don’t know of any reunions at the high school from which I actually graduated. It was so good talking with every one. I went through the town and took pictures today. Also stopped and talked to former teacher and counselor. 🙂 Very fun. Poem early this week though. I just got home about ten minutes ago and have work tomorrow. Long but wonderful weekend.
I’m about to post a new list of words, if you’re interested.
Talking with old teachers is so much fun … especially when they loved you. 😉
flipside,
I’ll be over tomorrow. Bedtime for me. Later sweetie. 😀
Yousei- hope you are feeling okay. Thanks for your sweet visits. k.
k,
Thank you for your visits and comments too. I’m doing very well. Losing a bit of weight (always a good thing) because I walk almost daily with my tyrant sister. 😉 It’s something I want to do anyway, just can’t seem to overcome the couch inertia. Still catching up on my backlog of reading. When that’s done, you’ll see visits with comments attached. See you soon.
pouring each syllable
into an unflamed samovar…i like…
Claudia,
I’m glad I’m writing a bit more often, because it’s always nice to read your comments. I’ve enjoyed catching up on my reading but haven’t had time to comment much. Shawna offered an irresistible list of words. Samovar alone was worth the temptation. Thanks for reading and sharing with me.
This is perfect… 🙂
Hey Cuz,
You’ve been as busy as I have. Happy to have you stop by. Good luck with all the goings on with the kids.
Thank you… oxo…
I thoroughly enjoyed this! Am at the beach with the kids and grand kids and therefore not posting at the moment. Hugs, Liz
Liz,
So glad you liked it. 😀 I’ve really enjoyed your last few posts that I’ve read (but I’m very behind in my reading). Enjoy your beach/kids/grandkids time. Don’t burn! 😉
love this!!
rdl,
Welcome back. 🙂 Glad you enjoyed it.
This is “delicious…” the kind of words that just feel good on the palate.
Victoria,
Welcome. Glad you enjoyed the brew. 😉 Thank you always for visiting and commenting.
The poultice for the words is just wonderful–the whole poem so interesting and successful despite difficult words! k.
k,
I enjoyed the list. Sometimes I read Shawna’s word list and think “Oh my.” This time my response was “Alright!” Glad you enjoyed the poem.
If cleverness with words could be packaged and sold in the supermarket, then perhaps the world could spin around a little faster, and there would be more magic than frustration. If I were packaging such words to put on the shelf for the shoppers, I’d start with this poem and stir things outward until every shopper was forced to buy a full dose of this wordcleverness.
Thomas Davis,
I’d let you too. You always make me smile and sit a bit straighter. I should be writing more often now that school has ended and summer’s begun. You and Ethel show signs of strong gifts in wordcleverness as well. Blogging can definitely offer a support and challenge through it’s community of writers. I’m so glad to enjoy both of these through our blogs.
Great use of the words here. I love bathing off the combustible years. Well done. Thanks
hobgoblin2011,
Thank you for reading and commenting. It was fun working with Shawna’s list of words–they were a great set.
A wonderful poem!
ayala,
So glad you liked it. Thank you for visiting and commenting.
Nice weaving of words ~ I specially like steeping and pouring it just right ~

Heaven,
That image seems to be the favorite…of course, I like it as well. 😉 Thanks for stopping in to read. I’ll visit you soon.
Some words indeed need to steep a little before being poured upon the page…wonderful verse IMHO.
slpmartin,
Welcome back. Sorry I’ve been away, but it is certainly good to see you here. Your humble opinion is important to me, and I’m delighted that you enjoyed the writing. I’m looking forward to catching up at your place soon.
sometimes you just need to let those words steep…let the emotions steep until the words are just strong enough to pour out…smiles….good to see you…
brian,
Thank you, kind sir. Good to be back and writing. I’ll try to keep the steeping to a more reasonable time. 😉
you are exactly right on the name…really freaky…had never heard of it before this one…deadly stuff…
brian,
I hadn’t heard of it either. Apparently the name has been around for quite a while, but the weather folks only started using it in the last few decades. Glad you and yours are safe.
hey you…was great to see you today…
brian,
It was great to be there. I’ve been by before but just a bit too busy to leave a comment. When I got to my sister’s, I had over 800 emails to read and sort through. I’ve gotten things almost back to normal, so you should notice rabbit tracks a bit more often. Thanks for stopping in. 😀
Wonderful wording throughout!
poemblaze,
Glad you liked it. Thank you for letting me share it with you.
Yousei after i read your poem i got a feeling of relief!!! Cheers Nonoy Manga
Nonoy Manga,
😀 Glad you liked it. Thanks as always for reading and commenting. I always enjoy reading your thoughts.
If you’re in Texas – you’re melting all right. Loved this, the language so evocative, the sense of a high tea serving words just right. Well done.
Gay,
Sweltering on a daily basis, that’s me. Thanks for coming by and reading. I’m glad you liked it. I had some great words with which to work from Shawna’s.
Yay! You just made my day. 🙂 I was thinking about you this morning. I love that picture.
This is definitely my favorite:
“pouring each syllable
into an unflamed samovar
and slapping on the lid
someday
when steeped just right
pour a cup”
And this:
“to strain out every sopping word
through this rough hurt”
So how’s Texas?
Shawna,
😀 I’m glad. I felt bad about not writing like I said I would last week. It was a bit crazy trying to get everything ready to start work this week, but I did it. Unfortunately your promise had to be postponed. I like the ending best too. I went back and polished up the beginning so it matched the ending better. You picked my favorite bits, lol. Texas, like a good chunk of the rest of the country, is hot. However…it’s actually warmer in Michigan this week. Now that is weird.
That IS weird! I hope you’re enjoying yourself. 🙂 And managing to stay cool somehow.
Shawna,
Definitely staying cool. My sister has good air conditioning and a pool. Not to mention great company. 😉
you don’t want to drink it till it’s steeped just right!!
sonnet 41
zongrik,
Got that right. 😉
